University Sudents
In the morning we had an introduction to the population demographics in Japan. It affects the popularity of go. First, in Japan what we call go is called Igo. I don't know when it got shortened for English. Japan's people are getting older as the birth rate drops. Fewer younger people are learning to play. The overall go population, is going down. We talked about ways to get people interested, and that is why they are teaching go in the schools. Shogi, Japanese chess is much more popular. In the afternoon we traveled by Subway to Tokyo Technical College. They said it is similar to MIT. It was a class of freshman men and women being taught by a female professional professor. It was just their third lesson but they are learning sophisticated things. I am enjoying the other people in the course, and amazed at how Tokyo has developed. It is very busy, but also very orderly. People are friendly. Everything is clean. I went out to a Thai food restaurant. We are also learning from each other. The experiences of the other workshop members are very impressive for me. We will make presentations at the end.
